THE MARLBOROUGH EXPERIENCE (5 DAYS & NIGHTS)

Day 1. A Compass representative meets you at the Wellington-Picton ferry terminal or Picton airport and whisks you down to Waikawa Marina, stopping at the supermarket to load up on your favourite goodies. EJ lies alongside the dock. Head into the Sounds in the reassuring hands of a professional skipper, or enjoy a full introduction to your boat and take her away yourself. Spend the day tootling in and out of bushclad bays, stickybeaking at the water-access-only homes and deciding which of the many waterfront lodges to visit for the evening. Choose one, moor up and take the restaurant's water taxi ashore for dinner.
Day 2. Time for a little fishing. Motor towards the head of Queen Charlotte Sound. Cast your line over for an hour to produce an abundant feed of blue cod, with a quick trip in the dinghy to the shore (or handy mussel farm) to collect a bucket of greenshell mussels. Prepare for your feast with an afternoon nap or an easy stroll around Motuara Island's remarkable bird sanctuary, followed by sundowners in the cockpit with the friendly occupants of the only other boat in your anchorage.
Day 3. Up bright and early. Put the coffee on, weigh anchor and head out - around the top of Arapawa Island into the notorious Cook Strait. Ride the easy swells past towering cliffs and swaying seaweeds and drop a line into the depths to see if you can tempt a groper. Hard a-starboard into the long, winding narrows of Tory Channel and the envious gaze of Interislander passengers, and into a snug bay on the eastern side of the channel that holds the sun till half past happy or later. BBQ those groper steaks, and leave the dishes till the morning.
Day 4. Amble along the ferry route back towards Waikawa, playing your favourite CD unnecessarily loudly. Step off your boat, fling your bags onto the bed of your luxurious Seafront apartment and take a long refreshing shower (or a spa) and decide where to go for dinner.
Day 5. It's either a wine trail or a round of golf. (You could go kayaking, but after the comfort of your charter boat, a kayak palls a little). The wine trail wins, and a minibus full of strangers collects and whisks you off to the first of almost a dozen wineries. By the end of the day you have discovered three completely unknown but utterly wonderful and grossly underpriced wines, learned half a dozen new songs, insisted all your fellow travellers visit you at home in Idaho. You are quite ready for bed.
Day 5. Take up Compass' offer of a ride to town and drop into a Picton cafe for a leisurely breakfast, a newspaper and an espresso. Buy a book you've always wanted to read, a little something for the folks at home, then figure out why you shouldnt stay here forever.
