Kaikoura has become famous as one of the best places in the world for whalewatching. The continental shelf that surrounds NZ is particularly narrow in this region, creating a unique combination of deep and shallow water within easy reach of the shore.
As well as attracting whales, the coast off Kaikoura is a real fisher magnet, where the sea teems with fish and a good catch is almost guaranteed. Mike Johnstone launches Molly-D off the beach and can have his guests fishing for groper in 100 metres within minutes of getting underway. Fat blue cod can be caught while Mike retrieves a cray pot or two, and a beer and a BBQ lunch or supper back at his place afterwards is usually the order of the day.
